The world at large looked on Captain Atom with suspicion due to uncertainty about his agenda and the nature of his abilities. Megala and the staff could help him further understand his abilities and occasionally so they could stabilize his body when he seemed to be having problems. He frequently returned to the Continuum so that Dr. Nathaniel Adam had only been Captain Atom for a few months and was still exploring his abilities, constantly learning new facets to them such as his ability to perceive wireless transmissions from cell phones and computers. This leads to a fear that at some point Captain Atom's brain might lose its molecular stability and he won't be able to fix it before it impairs his consciousness or causes him to suffer some form of brain death. His body maintains integrity by instantly re-merging these atoms, but extreme use of his powers can interfere with this process and cause Captain Atom's form to become unstable. Adam's physical atoms are constantly splitting apart, giving him incredible power. Megala, Captain Atom's abilities are largely nuclear in nature and involve tapping into the strong nuclear force, the energy that binds protons and neutrons in the nucleus. Soon afterwards, he reappeared, now an energy-based life form.Īccording to Dr. Adam was asked to pilot the dimensional-transfer vessel but is seemingly atomized during the experiment. Megala's research was focused on the quantum field and on "dimensional transfer through M Theory". However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.Nathaniel Adam volunteered to participate in an experiment conducted by a research facility called the Continuum.

Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-One era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact.

In the aftermath of the battle with Resurrection Man, the Atom-Master was captured and once again imprisoned. As a member of this group, the Atom-Master (now with a improved molecular-controlling helmet) has done battle with Superman, the Forgotten Heroes, and Resurrection Man during this latter encounter, the Forgotten Villains were working alongside Vandal Savage. He was then recruited into a group called the Forgotten Villains, each of whom had a score of his or her own to settle with the law. Some years later, he managed to escape, and briefly fought Superman again, escaping capture.
The Atom-Master was then imprisoned for his crimes. Using this device, he began a crime wave, which was stopped by Superman and Batman.
His crowning inventive achievement was a special helmet which is capable of projecting illusions onto congealed dust motes in the air, and then solidifying them enough so that they would behave according to the Atom-Master's will.
